Product

The Rapid7 Insight Agent is lightweight software installed on Windows, Linux and Mac assets that collects system data such as running processes and logs for Rapid7 products including InsightVM and InsightIDR. The Rapid7 Agent also offers Endpoint Prevention technology if you are a Managed Threat Complete (MTC) or Managed Detection and Response (MDR) customer with the Next-Generation Antivirus or Ransomware Prevention add-ons. The Rapid7 Agent gives you endpoint visibility and detection by collecting live system information—including basic asset identification information, running processes, and logs—from your assets and sending this data back to the Insight platform for analysis. The Rapid7 Agent is lightweight software you can install on supported assets—in the cloud or on-premises—to easily centralize and monitor data on the Command Platform. Recorded capabilities include central management console, malware detection and ransomware protection.

Vendor

Rapid7 was founded in Boston in 2000 and listed in 2015, and it occupies the same territory as Qualys — vulnerability management, detection and response — with a stronger emphasis on the attacker's point of view. It maintains Metasploit, the open-source exploitation framework used by penetration testers everywhere, which it acquired in 2009 and still publishes. Its products run on the Insight platform: InsightVM for vulnerability management, InsightIDR for detection and response, InsightCloudSec for cloud posture and InsightAppSec for application testing, with a managed detection service on top. The Rapid7 Insight Agent listed here is the single agent that feeds all of them. As with Qualys, the agent is bought as part of a security operations platform rather than as antivirus, so comparing it with the endpoint suites in this index is comparing two different purchases.
