Phoenix Contact is a German family-owned manufacturer of industrial connection and automation technology, and like Siemens it appears in this index because industrial networks need firewalls that ordinary IT equipment cannot provide. FL MGUARD, listed here, is its industrial security appliance line, which came from its acquisition of the Berlin company Innominate. The devices provide firewalling, VPN and network segmentation for machinery and plant networks, including models that fit directly into control cabinets on DIN rail and versions used to give machine builders secure remote access to equipment they have installed on a customer's site. That remote-maintenance use is the common one: a machine supplier needs to reach its equipment inside someone else's network without opening that network.
