Vendor

McAfee is one of the oldest names in the industry and now covers a much narrower business than the name suggests. Founded by John McAfee in 1987, it was bought by Intel in 2011 and traded as Intel Security, returned to its own name in 2017, listed, and then went private again in March 2022 when an investor group led by Advent International and Permira bought it for more than 14 billion dollars. It is headquartered in San Jose, California. The part that matters for this index is the split that happened just before that. In 2021 McAfee sold its enterprise business, which was merged with FireEye's products arm and renamed Trellix in 2022. Both companies appear here, and they are no longer related: anything McAfee sells today is for households, not organisations. The current line is McAfee+, sold as Essential, Premium and Advanced tiers, which bundle identity monitoring, personal data cleanup, a VPN and scam protection around the antivirus rather than selling the antivirus alone. The older McAfee Total Protection and McAfee AntiVirus Plus names remain on the lower-priced, device-focused plans. Vendor page →
