Vendor

Gen Digital is not a product brand: it is the company that now owns most of the consumer antivirus market's famous names. It was formed in 2022 when NortonLifeLock — itself the consumer half of Symantec, left behind when Broadcom bought the enterprise business in 2019 — merged with Avast. Through that lineage it owns Norton, Avast, AVG and Avira, all four of which appear separately in this index, along with LifeLock identity protection and CCleaner. What is listed under this name is the Norton line: Norton, Norton AntiVirus and Norton 360, the last being the bundle that combines antivirus with a VPN, cloud backup, a password manager and dark-web monitoring. The consolidation matters when reading results. Four of the best-known consumer brands in this index answer to one owner, and several of them share detection technology, so four separate-looking scores are not four independent opinions about a threat.
