Vendor

Bitdefender was founded in 2001 in Bucharest by Florin Talpeș, who still runs it, and grew out of SOFTWIN, the Romanian software firm he had started a decade earlier. It is privately held, its main research centre is still in Bucharest, and its North American operation is in San Antonio, Texas. The company says more than half its staff work in research and development and that it has filed over 580 patents. Home users buy Bitdefender Antivirus Plus, Bitdefender Internet Security, Bitdefender Total Security, Bitdefender Premium Security and Bitdefender Ultimate Security, with Bitdefender Antivirus for Mac, Bitdefender Mobile Security and a free edition beside them. Organisations buy Bitdefender GravityZone, which spans endpoint protection, XDR and a managed detection service. One thing matters when comparing scores across this index: Bitdefender licenses its detection engine to other security companies, so several products listed here under other names are running its engine underneath. Their laboratory results tend to move together rather than independently, which is worth knowing before reading two such scores as two opinions. Vendor page →
