Bitdefender was founded in 2001 in Bucharest by Florin Talpeș, who still runs it, and grew out of SOFTWIN, the Romanian software firm he had started a decade earlier. It is privately held, its main research centre is still in Bucharest, and its North American operation is in San Antonio, Texas. The company says more than half its staff work in research and development and that it has filed over 580 patents. Organisations buy Bitdefender GravityZone, which spans endpoint protection, XDR and a managed detection service.
