Vendor

AVG was founded in 1991 in Brno, then Czechoslovakia, by Tomáš Hofer and Jan Gritzbach as Grisoft. The brand is an abbreviation of its first product, Anti-Virus Guard, released in 1992; the company took the product's name in 2008 and listed in New York in 2012. It has not been independent since 2016, when Avast — another Czech antivirus company, 200 kilometres away in Prague — bought it for 1.3 billion dollars. Avast in turn merged with NortonLifeLock in 2022 to form Gen Digital, so AVG, Avast and Norton are today three brands of one American-listed company, all three of which are listed separately in this index. The products keep the AVG name: AVG AntiVirus FREE, AVG Internet Security and AVG Ultimate for households, with AVG AntiVirus for Android and macOS editions, and AVG AntiVirus Business Edition and AVG Internet Security Business Edition for small organisations. The free tier is the one most people meet, and it is a full scanner rather than a trial. Since the Avast acquisition the two brands have shared a detection engine, so their laboratory results tend to track each other closely — worth knowing before reading an AVG score and an Avast score as two independent opinions.
